I think Alice Munro once said something to the effect of stories being autobiographical in feeling but not in the actual events. That is the case for ‘An Answer in Search of a Question,’ which was born from a conversation I had with someone whose mother was undergoing the initial stages of dementia. I populated the story with characters both imagined and loosely real, only everything is stretched, rearranged, and ordered anew—perhaps not unlike the way dementia itself reorganizes reality.
