Chronicle
The chronicle of my life
is based on a true story.
Each day, leafing through its pages,
I focus on a half-remembered detail
or two. Catching up with myself
is invariably rewarding, yet there appear
a number of alternative endings,
some less plausible, less likely,
than others. I've discussed
these inconsistencies with my editor,
who downplays my concerns.
Live a bit longer, he suggests.
You may be surprised by the way
things turn out. I have considered
speaking directly to the publisher,
but he is rarely, if ever, available.
Have you seen your new chapters?
his secretary asks me, barely looking up.
Last night, I couldn't put them down.
